Here is an opinion you will not hear from an epoxy brand: most live edge slabs do not need resin.
We work with live edge wood every day at our Austin shop, and we build epoxy resin pieces alongside our solid slabs. We love a good river pour. But resin is a tool, not a style. It has four legitimate jobs on live edge wood, and outside those four jobs it usually makes a slab worse, not better.

The Four Jobs Resin Actually Does on Live Edge Wood
After years of pours, here is where epoxy earns its keep on a live edge slab.
1. Filling cracks, knots, and voids. This is the workhorse use. Live edge slabs come from real trees, and real trees have checks, bug holes, and open knots. Clear or black epoxy fills those imperfections, stabilizes the wood, and makes the surface usable. Done right, a black epoxy fill makes the natural character pop instead of hiding it.
2. The river table. Two slabs, live edges facing inward, a channel of tinted resin flowing between them. When the wood is right, the result is stunning. We wrote a full breakdown on why the wood matters more than the epoxy in a river table.
3. Encapsulating soft or spalted wood. Some of the most beautiful wood is structurally weak. Spalted or partially punky sections can be locked in resin so the beauty survives daily use.
4. Thin protective coats. A shallow flood coat on a bar top or charcuterie board adds a glassy, waterproof surface where spills live.

When Resin Ruins a Live Edge Slab
Now the other side, because nobody selling epoxy will tell you this.
- Drowning great grain in thick gloss. A beautiful slab under a quarter inch of glassy resin looks like furniture shrink-wrapped in plastic. Great wood wants a matte, hand-rubbed oil finish you can actually feel.
- Using resin to rescue junk wood. Epoxy stabilizes small weak spots. It cannot turn a rotted, cracked, poorly dried slab into a good table. Bad wood plus good epoxy equals bad table.
- Pouring over wet wood. This is the killer. Wood that was not kiln-dried to 6 to 9% moisture keeps moving after the pour, and the wood-to-resin joint cracks. Every time. Our guide to choosing live edge lumber covers how to check before you buy.
- Skipping the seal coat. Raw wood is full of air. Pour deep epoxy straight onto unsealed wood and bubbles stream out of the grain for hours. A thin seal coat first, cured fully, stops it.
Epoxy vs. Resin: What the Words Actually Mean
Quick vocabulary, because the terms get thrown around loosely.
Resin is the broad category: any viscous substance, natural like tree sap or synthetic, that hardens into a solid. Epoxy resin is one type of synthetic resin, made of two parts, a resin and a hardener, that cure through a chemical reaction into a hard, clear, durable surface.
Other resins exist. Polyester resin is cheaper and common in fiberglass work. Polyurethane resin is flexible and used in coatings. For live edge furniture, epoxy is the right answer almost every time. It cures strong, resists heat better, and stays clearer longer.
Choosing the Right Epoxy for a Live Edge Project
The single biggest technical decision in any live edge resin project is matching the epoxy type to the pour depth.

Use table top epoxy for a deep pour and it flashes, overheats, and cracks. Use deep pour for a thin coat and it stays soft too long and picks up dust. Match the product to the job.
Color is the fun part. Liquid dyes give solid color, mica powders give a metallic shimmer, and a drop of black pigment turns crack fills into bold graphic lines. Add pigment gradually, test small, and mix the entire batch at once so the color stays consistent through the pour.
How Much Epoxy Do You Need?
The math is simple and worth doing before you order, because running out mid-pour ruins the piece.
- Measure the cavity. Length times width times depth, in inches, of the area the resin will fill.
- Convert to gallons. Divide cubic inches by 231.
- Add 10 to 15% margin for soak-in, spillage, and the meniscus.
A river channel 60 inches long, 6 inches wide on average, and 1.75 inches deep works out to roughly 630 cubic inches, or about 2.7 gallons before margin. For irregular channels, measure the width at several points and average it.
The Pour, Start to Finish
The full process deserves its own workshop day, but here is the honest shape of it, including the parts DIY videos gloss over.
Flatten first. The slab must be truly flat before the mold gets built. A router sled handles slabs too wide for a planer. Skip this and the mold never seals.
Build a mold that cannot leak. Melamine or plywood wrapped in sheathing tape, or reusable HDPE sheet. Walls about 3 inches tall, screwed together, every seam sealed with silicone caulk. Let the caulk cure fully before pouring. Acrylic caulk and hot glue both fail under a deep pour, and a leak in hour one is how epoxy ends up on the floor instead of in your table.
Secure the wood. Dry slabs float in liquid epoxy. Tape-wrapped blocks and clamps hold the slab down so it does not rise mid-cure.
Seal, then pour. Thin seal coat on the wood, cure, then the main pour. Deep channels beyond the product's max depth get poured in layers.
Torch the bubbles. A quick pass with a torch or heat gun right after pouring pops surface bubbles. Short passes. Lingering scorches the resin.
Wait longer than you want to. Deep pours need days to fully harden. Sanding soft epoxy tears it and never levels.
Sand progressively. Start around 120 grit, walk up through 220 and beyond to 600 for a glassy surface. A drum sander or wide belt sander saves hours on big tops. Skipped grits leave scratches that show forever under the finish.
Finish matte. A hardwax oil or penetrating oil finish keeps the wood feeling like wood and the epoxy looking like glass. High-gloss film finishes over the whole top read as plastic.
Filling Cracks and Voids: The Most Useful Skill in Live Edge Work
If you only ever learn one resin skill, learn this one. Nearly every live edge slab has a check, knot, or void somewhere, and a clean epoxy fill is what makes the slab usable without sacrificing character.
The short version: clean all debris out of the void, tape the underside so resin cannot drain through, mix a small batch (tinted black or left clear), fill slightly proud of the surface, pop the bubbles, let it cure fully, then sand flush. For deep voids, fill in stages rather than one big pour.

What is the best epoxy for a live edge river table? A dedicated deep pour epoxy, poured within the manufacturer's depth limits. Table top epoxy overheats in deep channels and cracks. For food-contact surfaces like charcuterie boards, confirm the product is rated food-safe once cured.
How long does epoxy take to dry on a live edge table? Thin coats are typically workable in 24 to 48 hours. Deep pours need several days to fully harden, longer in cool rooms. Sanding early is the most common way to ruin a pour, so wait.
What wood works best with resin? Kiln-dried hardwood, full stop. Walnut is the classic pairing in the maker world for its dark contrast against tinted resin, and black walnut river tables remain the most requested look. Oak, maple, and cherry all work. Can epoxy fix a cracked slab? It can stabilize a crack and make it beautiful. It cannot fix a slab that is still moving because it was never dried properly. Fill stable cracks with confidence. Walk away from wet wood.
Does resin make a table more durable? Filled voids and a proper finish, yes. But a solid hardwood slab with a hand-rubbed oil finish is already durable enough for decades of family life, and it is easier to repair. Solid wood sands and refinishes. Thick resin coats do not.
