// How it works
Four things decide your table size
- 01
Clearance
36″ between the table edge and the wall lets someone pull out a chair. 42″ is comfortable, and 48″ lets people walk behind seated guests. The calculator takes this off every side of the room first.
- 02
Elbow room
24″ of table edge per person is the standard. Use 27″ for a relaxed dinner and 30″ for armchairs. When people sit at the ends, the side chairs stay about 6″ out of each corner so knees don't collide.
- 03
The base
A pedestal or frame base keeps the ends open. Four corner legs take about 8″ from each long side and can cost you the end seats on a narrow top. None of our bases have corner legs.
- 04
The live edge
A natural edge changes width along the slab. Generic calculators treat every table as a perfect rectangle. This one checks the widest point against your room and uses the narrowest point to work out the seats.

Dining table size questions
What size dining table seats 8?
A table 84″ to 96″ long (7 to 8 feet) and 36–42″ wide seats 8: three on each side and one at each end, at 24″ of table edge per person. Give it a room of about 14′ × 10′ 4″ so everyone can pull out a chair with 42″ to spare. If your chairs have arms, go closer to 96″.
What size table seats 10?
Ten people need a table about 108″ to 120″ long (9 to 10 feet) and at least 40″ wide: four on each side plus one at each end. The room should be roughly 16′ × 10′ 4″. Our live edge slabs from 102″ up are cut for this size.
How many people can sit at a 6 ft table?
A 6 ft (72″) dining table seats 6 comfortably: two on each side and one at each end. Party-rental 6 ft folding tables are only 30″ wide, and events often fit 8 by putting four on each side with no one at the ends. That's 18″ per person, which works for a banquet but feels tight for a dinner that lasts a while.
How many people does an 8 ft or 10 ft dining table seat?
An 8 ft (96″) table seats 8 at 24″ per person, or 6 with roomy armchairs. A 10 ft (120″) table seats 10 at 24″ per person, or 10 with 27″ each. For 12 people, plan on about 11 ft (132″).
How wide should a dining table be?
Between 36″ and 42″ for most homes. 36″ fits a place setting on each side with room for shared dishes in the middle, and 42″ adds space for serving platters. Past about 48″ you can't reach across, so extra width doesn't add seats. On a live edge table, measure at the narrowest point.
How wide are dining room tables?
Most dining room tables are 36″ to 42″ wide. Live edge slabs vary along their length because the natural edge curves. Our in-stock finished tables run from 30″ at their narrowest to 60″ at their widest, so check both numbers: the widest point has to fit the room, and the narrowest point decides how comfortable the seats are.
How much space do you need around a dining table?
Leave at least 36″ between the table edge and the wall or furniture so people can pull out a chair and sit down. 42″ is comfortable, and 48″ lets someone walk behind seated guests. Measure to anything that sticks out into the room, like a sideboard, a radiator or a door swing, not just to the wall.
What size conference table do I need?
Allow 30″ of table edge per person (36″ for executive chairs) and 48″ behind each chair so people can roll back and others can pass. A 10-person conference table works out to about 132″ × 48″, which needs a room of about 19′ × 12′. Switch on conference mode in the calculator for these settings.
Does the table base change how many people can sit?
Yes. A pedestal or frame base leaves the ends and corners open, so you get the most seats for the length. Four corner legs take about 8″ from each long side, and on narrower tables they also squeeze out the end seats. None of the bases we stock have corner legs: they're all steel frames or a center pedestal.
How do I measure a live edge table for my room?
Use the widest point of the slab to check it fits the room with clearance, and the narrowest point to check seating comfort. A live edge slab listed as 96″ × 41–47″ takes up 47″ of floor space, but someone at the 41″ end has 41″ to work with. The calculator does this for you with each table we have in stock.
