- The knock test. A real solid wood slab sounds dense and deep when you tap it. Particleboard sounds hollow.
- The edge test. Look at the transition where the top meets the "live" side. On real wood, grain wraps naturally around the edge. On veneer, you will see a seam.
- The weight test. A real slab standing desk top is heavy. If two people can lift one easily, it is probably not solid wood.
- The grain repeat. Real wood grain never repeats. Printed veneer often does, subtly, every 12 to 18 inches.

What a Real Live Edge Standing Desk Is Made Of
A real live edge standing desk has two parts, and both matter.
The slab. A solid piece of hardwood, cut lengthwise from a log, with the natural edge preserved on one or both sides. It should be kiln-dried to 6 to 9% moisture content so it stays flat in a climate-controlled office. Thickness should be at least 1.5 inches for a full-size desk, ideally closer to 2 inches. The standing desk base. A height-adjustable metal frame, usually electric, with two or three motors that let you switch from sitting to standing. Look for at least 220 pounds of weight capacity, quiet motors, and a base with a wide footprint for stability.

Size. A standard adult desk is 48 to 72 inches wide and 24 to 30 inches deep. Go bigger only if you have the room. Bigger slabs make bigger, heavier desks, which puts more strain on the adjustable base.

Solid walnut standing desks are beautiful and expensive. Other common species include white oak, cherry, and maple.

- Use coasters for drinks. Water rings are the number one cause of desk damage.
- Wipe with a damp microfiber cloth, not chemical cleaners.
- Re-oil once or twice a year to keep the finish fresh.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight for long stretches. UV fades every wood over time.
- Address scratches early with a light sand and re-oil in that spot. Solid wood repairs. Veneer does not.
